Call to Action Billboards

Exploration of Visual Communication

Students were introduced to the topics of world issues and social causes. Students learned about artists Barbara Kruger and Banksy, who use art to convey a social message in the hopes to change people's opinions on world issues and cultural phenomina. They analyzed art pieces by these artist to see how text and images are juxtaposed to create a visual message. Students then collaboratively brainstormed a list of social and world issues. Students were charged with creating a billboard that portrayed a visual message about a social/world topic of their choice, utilizing text and images. They used the elements/principles of design: contrast, emphasis, line, space, and color.
