
Dia De Los Muertos
Mini-Lesson: Any Grade Level
Students explored the Mexican holiday, "Dia De Los Muertos" in conjunction with Halloween. They analyzed the holiday and discussed similarities/differences between this cultural celebration and Halloween in the USA. Students were introduced to the traditional craft of making sugar skulls. They learned about how they are traditionally made using sugar or ceramics and how they are made for deceased relatives as an offering. They also evaluated the symmetrical line designs and symbols that are drawn on sugar skulls as representational decoration. Students then created their own sugar skulls by drawing their own symmetrical designs and symbols on a skull.

Objectives:

Students will be able to… identify the Mexican holiday, “Dia De Los Muertos” by understanding and analyzing the characteristics of the holiday.
