A Commotion in the Ocean

This is an installation created by a 3rd grade class. Students studied the artist Aurora Robson and discussed how the things we leave behind can have a lasting impact. Aurora repurposes discarded items, often found on the beach, to create beautiful 3-dimensional works of art. Students drew inspiration from Aurora to created plastic bag jellyfish. Students focused on form and pattern while creating their jellyfish. They displayed their works to promote awareness of pollution and to get viewers to consider how the things they leave behind can affect others. They hope to inspire viewers to recycle discarded items in their own homes.

Objectives:
-
The student will (be able to) (SWBAT)… understand how pollution affects wildlife in the ocean by examining the negative effects of pollution.
-
The student will (be able to)… explore various ways of repurposing materials by creating 3 dimensional works (using recycled materials).
-
The student will (be able to)… apply techniques of pattern to 3D works of art.
-
The student will (be able to)… construct and evaluate an installation within a space by working collaboratively (using their works: jellyfish, collaborative ocean scene background).
