Mythical Relief Sculptures
Stories Through Sculpture
Students were introduced to the art style of relief sculpture. Students explored art historical examples (as well as contemporary examples) from various cultures and the purpose of relief sculptures historically. They created their own relief sculpture based off of a mythological story that they liked or found interesting. They analyzed how myths were used to understand the natural world and how they can have a deeper meaning. Students used the subtractive techniques associated with sculpture, and the elements/principles of design: form, proportion, texture, emphasis, line and space. Students had the option to paint their relief sculpture when they finished carving.
