Mandalas: Colors of the Universe
Radial Design and Color Mixing Lesson
Student Examples

Lesson Summary
Students explored mandalas and the cultural background surrounding them. They analyzed historical mandalas from multiple cultures, building connections between them. They evaluated these works and explored the concepts surrounding the art of mandalas. Students then created their own mandala; focusing on conveying their mantra (identity) or a “wish” for the universe (students chose a would issue that they would like to solve; they then created a mandala about this issue and their “wish” to end it). For example, students may choose to create a mandala about world hunger; they use symbols, colors, and imagery to represent the issue. They focused on 2 Big Ideas - empathy and identity. Students must also explored color and the medium of gouache by practicing mixing and applying paints in various colors and techniques.
