Posterized Color Portraits
Student Examples
Lesson Summary
Students practice applying varied values of shading by drawing a stylized portrait of someone from history or modern-day that they admire or look up to. Students will learn about the contemporary artist, Shepard Fairy, and his style of art. Students will then create a Shepard Fairy inspired portrait using a posterized effect to create "form" using various color values.
Opening and closing activities include Kahoot games and entrance/exit slips.

Step 4: Match the color value to the value in the black and white posterized image. Like a paint by number, color in each section of the portrait until completed.

Step 3: Create a color value scale equal to the number of values in the posterized image. Then using your phone or a photo editing program, turn the color scale into black and white to ensure they are in proper value order.

Step 2: In a photo editing program of your choice, make the photo black and white. Then posterize it. Count the number of values. Trace the image on transfer paper and transfer to white paper. The full list of steps can be found in the PowerPoint.

Step 1: Find an image of your inspiring figure. The image should be from the shoulders up and have good resolution.
